Chevy Brainstorms Improvements to Volt Battery

Worried about Chevy Volt battery safety? You're not alone. Munday Chevy, however, is here, with a few pieces of information that will hopefully help put your mind at ease.

The Chevy Volt, known for its extremely high level of consumer satisfaction (the highest actually, according to a recent study by Consumer Reports), is under investigation by the NHTSA. The reason for the investigation is an extremely small percentage of fire outbreaks stemming from the Volt's li-ion battery, shortly after a crash. Of course, any evidence of a fire outbreak is enough to warrant an investigation - not only by the NHTSA but also by the auto manufacturer on what they can do to remedy the situation. Obviously, it was not Chevy's intention for any of this to happen and they are very, very sorry it did.

So, that's the back story. As far as the part that will put your mind at ease... Chevrolet, parent company, GM, has offered loaner cars to drivers who feel that their Volt might be at risk following an accident. They've even gone so far as to buy vehicles back. Though few owners have taken GM up on these offers, the actions speaks loudly of their commitment to keeping drivers safe and well...satisfied.

Beyond that, Chevrolet is currently mulling over a handful of possible fixes to the Volt battery. These include reinforcing the more at-risk components of the battery and laminating in-battery circuitry, as well as measures to prevent coolant from leaking in the event of an crash, whether minor fender bender or head-on collision.

In addition to corrective measures, Chevrolet is also currently analyzing data to determine whether a global recall is needed or if the imminent fix can be implemented only in batteries currently manufactured at its factory in Brownstown Township. Action steps and respective time frames are expected to be announced shortly. In total, the measures are expected to cost Chevrolet approximately one-grand per Volt.

Stay tuned to find out exactly what the final verdicts are. Of course, if you have any questions or concerns regarding the Volt in the mean time, feel free to contact Munday Chevy. Or, swing by and see us in person at N17800 North Freeway Houston, TX.
